Minneapolis to allow Azaan during Ramadhan

United States city of Minneapolis to allow Azaan during Ramadhan to be played via mosque speakers.

The call to prayer is allowed to be played three times a day within a decibel limit of 70 decibels. It is not allowed to be played in the morning for Fajr prayer or at night for Isha salah.

City council member Jamal Osman presented the bill in the name of “equality”.

“This is America, and we are allowed to share our faith from the rooftops, just like everyone else,” he said, saying that the call is allowed at the same hours that are given to Christian church bells.

Before this decision, Muslims had to rely on alarms, which many people use using apps on their phones as a reminder of when Salah starts.

“This is huge. This is huge to many people who call Minneapolis home,” Osman said after the acceptance of the bill.

The Azaan was first legalised in the US in the city of Hamtramck, Michigan, in 2004. But hearing the Azaan during Ramadhan on loudspeaker will be a landmark moment for Muslims living in the United States.
