Saudi oxygen sent to India amid shortage in Covid-19 ravaged country

India has received a delivery of roughly 80 metric tons of oxygen from Saudi Arabia to help alleviate a critical shortage of oxygen in the country.

Images of the first tanks and medical-grade oxygen cylinders heading to an Indian port prompted an outpouring of gratitude on social media.

The shortage of oxygen in India underlines how serious the covid-19 crisis is in India – the world’s second most populous country. Fragile supply chains have failed to keep pace with surging demand, adding pressure to the already overstretched health services, crematoriums and the government.

India has recorded nearly 18.7 million Covid-19 cases – second only to the United States – and more than 207,000 deaths to date.
